The Tradition Continues At Stonehame
It was no accident that Stonehame Lodge & Chalets was built high on Fitzpatrick Mountain, near the historic town of Pictou, Nova Scotia. This picturesque region was first settled by James Fitzpatrick who moved to the province from Ireland in the 1800′s. The owners of Stonehame Lodge & Chalets are the Gunn Family, farmers in Pictou County for four generations and direct descendants of the original settlers in the area. The lodge and 10 chalets are part of Stonehame Farm, a family operated, working farm that produces young female dairy cows (heifers) and forage and grain crops. From nearly any room or chalet at Stonehame visitors can experience a vast panoramic view of this rich farm and coastal region and watch the various ‘goings-on’ at the farm below.
“Today, there are four generations living on Stonehame Farm,” says General Manager, Jeff Gunn. “And we intend to continue to make agriculture, family, the land and nature a significant part of the Stonehame experience. Farming is in our blood and we couldn’t imagine our lives without it. We invite you to visit the farm, the lodge and chalets and learn about what goes into producing food and working the land.”
It is this family farming tradition that plays such a vital role in the day to day operation of Stonehame Lodge and Chalets. From the aroma of homemade bread baking in the kitchen at the main lodge, a warm greeting from a student receptionist at the check-in desk, to the sound of excited children playing with a new litter of kittens at the barn, Stonehame is truly a different kind of travel destination. There are sleigh rides and pond hockey in the winter, scheduled spiritual retreats, miles of groomed hiking and biking trails, geocaching events, Christmas parties and dozens of other activities to keep a farmhand busy for weeks!
Whether planning a wedding, a corporate or family event or simply wanting a weekend away from it all, Stonehame is probably the place for you!
